Broken Shadows is a quartet which brings together some of the most important voice of the American jazz scene, with years of collaborations and successes behind them. The result of their union is a musical style characterized by shared loves and common inspirations, which radiates not only homages but also inspirations that allow the deep roots of music to reach our present. The quartet’s name comes from a composition by saxophonist and composter Ornette Coleman, honoring his musical heritage as well as that of their mentors Dewey Redman, Charline Haden and Julius Hemphill. The band brings Coleman’s work to life in an extraordinary way approaching it with new experimentation, deep grooves and infectious melodies.
Branford Marsalis writes on the liner notes of their latest album: “Most songs have melodies contagious and singable. Songs you would like to put in your pocket and take home. In a time of songs treated as vehicles for improvisation, with this band, the vehicle is the song.” The American saxophonist goes on to add that: “Harmonic data doesn’t create emotion; the ability to change color in the sound does. This is something that Broken Shadows understands, whether explicit or implicit. The twelve tracks range from lament to lighthearted swagger, to absolute joy and to all the colors in between.”
