He chose to call his band “Ronin” in homage to the tradition of the masterless samurai. The Zurich pianist Nik Bärtsch conquers with a definitely original music, made of balances and tensions and of relations between the East and the metropolitan environment, which pays tribute to the great minimalists.
Despite the band’s multiple influences, it possesses a strong individuality and it incorporates elements from disparate musical worlds, such as funk, contemporary classical music and sounds from Japanese ritual music. All these forms are amalgamated in a new style and consistent, immersing the audience in a special universe which aims to open the ears of the listener. Composition, phrasing, sound structure, performance and musical combine to form a system of interconnected elements.
The basic structure has a rhythm with almost ritual connotations, as Bärtsch himself explained. “I do not know if there is a personal conception of music. Each of us draws from the past, from the musicians of reference, from what excites, fascinates and strikes him spiritually. Energy is the basic element from all my musical creations. I start from an idea that I then develop with the band, organism which lives a life of its own and must be allowed to grow and change in all its expressions. Rhythm, melody and harmony are only what will contribute together with the music, with my music.”
