Lo zio di Steve, batterista dell&#8217;esercito, lo incoraggia a prendere lezioni di batteria all&#8217;et\u00e0 di sette anni; all&#8217;et\u00e0 di 11 anni \u00e8 gi\u00e0 stato ospite di Dizzy Gillespie. Studia musica all&#8217;Eastman College di Rochester, suonando nell&#8217;ensemble di fiati e nella banda da concerto, e di notte in un club con Chick Corea, Chuck Mangione, Joe Romano e Frank Pullara. Dopo il college, si \u00e8 arruolato e ha trascorso tre anni in una banda militare. Successivamente ha suonato e lavorato con una big band a Rochester. Nel 1972 forma un trio con Tony Levin e Mike Holmes, con cui va a New York.<br \/>\nDalla fine degli anni &#8217;70 Gadd diventa il batterista pi\u00f9 richiesto e probabilmente il pi\u00f9 imitato al mondo. Chick Corea ha detto: \u00abOgni batterista vuole suonare come Gadd perch\u00e9 suona in modo perfetto. . .
